Free shipping: explain thresholds and exceptions

Show both the condition and current shipping charge. A free-shipping banner is insufficient when the order is ineligible.

Research context: Baymard · Free-shipping conditions near the product ↗

01 / THE PROBLEM

A threshold prompt can push shoppers toward extras costing more than the shipping they save.

02 / WHEN THIS FITS

Calculate using correct discounts and exclusions. Keep additional purchasing optional and show normal delivery choices.

Try the pattern

Task and expected result

  1. 01

Add one Trail mug and two Coasters: 300 kr qualifies for free delivery.

  2. 02

Apply LAB10: merchandise becomes 276 kr, delivery 49 kr and total 325 kr.

  3. 03

Choose the uncovered region: total must be unknown, not free.

FROM PRINCIPLE TO SHOPPING TASK

A worked example, step by step

A 300 kr basket can qualify for free delivery before a discount and lose eligibility afterwards. In this example all merchandise counts after discount, including accessories. LAB10 applies only to mugs. The threshold is a teaching rule that makes the calculation visible.

Try discounts and delivery thresholds ↗
  1. Select Home mug and add two Coasters without adding the mug. Select Trail mug and add one mug: 240 + 30 + 30 = 300 kr. Standard delivery becomes 0 kr.
  2. Apply LAB10. The mug receives 24 kr off; accessories receive none. Merchandise becomes 276 kr, standard delivery 49 kr and total 325 kr. Explain that another 24 kr reaches the threshold.
  3. Remove the code: total returns to 300 kr. Switch to the uncovered region: the threshold must not invent an unavailable delivery service.

The tradeoff to decide

More purchasing is not automatically a better outcome for the shopper. Adding an 80 kr item to save 49 kr delivery increases payment by 31 kr. Show normal delivery beside the amount remaining and let the shopper keep the current basket.

From demonstration to your store

Define whether the threshold uses pre- or post-discount amounts, eligible merchandise, regions and services. Apply the same rule in product, basket and checkout views. Investigate margin, cancellations and returns alongside order value; this lab measures none of them.

How to investigate value

Measure confirmed, deduplicated outcomes per eligible checkout start. Define paid orders and accepted credit orders separately.

Watch for side effects

Payment errors, duplicate orders, incorrect totals, unclear arrival dates and discount cost. A pay click is only an attempt.

This is a proposed investigation, not a measured result. Choose one hypothesis and define the audience before testing.
