Sold out, backorder and unknown availability are distinct states and must not make the same purchase promise.
Stock, sold-out items and backorders
Temporarily unavailable products need a path forward. Backorders can help when the business can actually deliver later and explains expectations.
Research context: Baymard · Handling out-of-stock products ↗
Offer backorder only when the business can fulfill it. Made-to-order needs production lead time; a transport estimate alone is insufficient.
Try the pattern
Task and expected result
- 01
Switch the Supply lab from available to sold out: purchase actions should stop.
- 02
In Famme: black XL should say simulated backorder before adding to the test cart.
- 03
Test changed stock after adding to cart; show the issue without losing the other items.
- 04
Softy black XL is labeled simulated backorder and excluded by Available variants only.
- 05
A back-in-stock request needs separate consent; it must not also subscribe the shopper to newsletters.
How to investigate value
Ask shoppers to explain their variant choice and fit. Later measure confirmed purchases per eligible product visitor, with return reasons as follow-up.
Watch for side effects
Wrong sizes, unknown details shown as facts, mismatched expectations and product-related support/returns.
This is a proposed investigation, not a measured result. Choose one hypothesis and define the audience before testing.
