A storewide static count can promise matches absent from the collection.
Filter counts and zero matches without losing choices
A facet count should describe its effect in the current context. Keep selected zero-count values removable.
Research context: Baymard · Combining filter values ↗
Calculate counts with other facets active. Distinguish product counts from variant counts.
Try the pattern
Task and expected result
- 01
Choose L and in stock: brown Softy should have zero matches.
- 02
Remove the stock requirement and check backorders can return.
- 03
Keep a selected zero value and remove it from the overview.
How to investigate value
Observe whether participants find an item meeting every need, not just how many cards they click. For measurement: relevant selections per eligible search/list visitor.
Watch for side effects
Zero results, false variant matches, lost list context and slow filters. More product-page visits are not necessarily better.
This is a proposed investigation, not a measured result. Choose one hypothesis and define the audience before testing.
