A returns query in an unnoticed product scope can return zero despite available help.
Search scope: products, help or all content
Show what the search covers. Let shoppers widen its scope without losing the query.
Research context: Baymard · Search scope ↗
A simple search can show products and help together. Large catalogs may offer explicit scopes.
Try the pattern
Task and expected result
- 01
Search returns with Products selected: see an explanation and scope choice.
- 02
Switch to All: show the help answer and retain the query.
- 03
Use Back: scope and query should follow browser history.
A worked example, step by step
A shopper asks about returns while searching only products. A bare zero-result message can wrongly suggest the store has no information. The lab exposes the scope and lets the shopper widen it without retyping.
Try a search in the wrong scope ↗- Open the example with returns in product scope. The search field retains the text and the scope shows Products.
- Choose All and see the help answer. Label it as help without a product price or add button.
- Use Back and Forward. Both query and scope follow history; switching scope must not alter the word.
The tradeoff to decide
A scope control adds a decision before the shopper gets an answer. Small stores can show products and help together by default. Offer scoping when result volume makes it useful and explain the active scope beside results.
From demonstration to your store
Catalog and help copy need separate maintained sources. A catalog failure is not zero matches and a help article must not inherit stock status. Investigate whether people find the correct answer and variant rather than merely clicking the first result.
How to investigate value
Observe whether participants find an item meeting every need, not just how many cards they click. For measurement: relevant selections per eligible search/list visitor.
Watch for side effects
Zero results, false variant matches, lost list context and slow filters. More product-page visits are not necessarily better.
This is a proposed investigation, not a measured result. Choose one hypothesis and define the audience before testing.
