An empty field after an unsuccessful search removes the explanation for the results.
Visible search with an editable query
Give search a label, submit button and the previous query. Shoppers should refine a search without starting over.
Research context: Baymard · Persist search queries ↗
Search suits larger catalogs and exact items. A small gift-card store can use direct selection.
Try the pattern
Task and expected result
- 01
Search blue 500 and check the text remains.
- 02
Edit 500 to 350 without clearing the query.
- 03
Use Back: restore the previous query and results.
How to investigate value
Observe whether participants find an item meeting every need, not just how many cards they click. For measurement: relevant selections per eligible search/list visitor.
Watch for side effects
Zero results, false variant matches, lost list context and slow filters. More product-page visits are not necessarily better.
This is a proposed investigation, not a measured result. Choose one hypothesis and define the audience before testing.
