Zero results does not always mean a missing product; query and filters can conflict.
Product search and zero results
An empty search result should offer relevant ways forward. Shoppers need to revise their search without restarting their visit.

Collection search applies to that collection. Help search and suggestions live in Discovery; do not promise global search on a collection page.
Try the pattern
Task and expected result
- 01
Search for a gift card, submitting with the button or Enter.
- 02
Search for zzzzz. An explanation and actions to clear search/filters should appear.
- 03
Clear only the search: collection, sorting and other filters should remain.
- 04
Combine a query with a nonmatching color filter. Clear only search: preserve the color.
- 05
Search the fixture with uppercase and Norwegian characters; normalization must not change the visible query.
How to investigate value
Observe whether participants find an item meeting every need, not just how many cards they click. For measurement: relevant selections per eligible search/list visitor.
Watch for side effects
Zero results, false variant matches, lost list context and slow filters. More product-page visits are not necessarily better.
This is a proposed investigation, not a measured result. Choose one hypothesis and define the audience before testing.
