A persuasive label does not make an arbitrary ranking correct.
Product sorting with reliable data
Sorting should fit the shopping task. Price, recency, popularity and ratings each need their own data.
Research context: Baymard · Essential sort types ↗
Prioritize comparable prices; expand when the data source supports more choices.
Try the pattern
Task and expected result
- 01
Filter a collection, choose high price first: membership must remain the same and prices must be ordered correctly.
- 02
Sort mug packs by unit price: the 12-pack should precede the 4-pack despite a higher total price.
- 03
Return to featured: restore original order without removing active filters.
How to investigate value
Observe whether participants find an item meeting every need, not just how many cards they click. For measurement: relevant selections per eligible search/list visitor.
Watch for side effects
Zero results, false variant matches, lost list context and slow filters. More product-page visits are not necessarily better.
This is a proposed investigation, not a measured result. Choose one hypothesis and define the audience before testing.
