Breadcrumbs and return to product lists

Separate category hierarchy from the previous results list. A return action should preserve query, filters and sort.

Research context: Baymard · Two types of breadcrumbs ↗

01 / THE PROBLEM

A plain category link can lose the shopper’s active selection.

02 / WHEN THIS FITS

Provide category navigation for visitors arriving directly from an external link too.

Try the pattern

Task and expected result

  1. 01

Filter Famme by brown and size M, sort by price, open a product and return: retain every choice.

  2. 02

Open a product directly: its category remains available; no invented results list appears.

  3. 03

Test return path https://example.invalid or //example.invalid: the link must not become external.

How to investigate value

Observe whether participants find an item meeting every need, not just how many cards they click. For measurement: relevant selections per eligible search/list visitor.

Watch for side effects

Zero results, false variant matches, lost list context and slow filters. More product-page visits are not necessarily better.

This is a proposed investigation, not a measured result. Choose one hypothesis and define the audience before testing.
