Pickup is a fulfillment choice with its own requirements, not an ordinary address with free shipping.
Shipping, pickup points and local pickup
Show all available fulfillment methods where shoppers choose fulfillment. Explain cost, location and timing before they decide.
Research context: Baymard · Fulfillment selection ↗
Remove address requirements for pickup, preserve typed address on return to shipping and show pickup location separately.
Try the pattern
Task and expected result
- 01
Enter a test address, select pickup, then return to shipping: the address should be preserved.
- 02
Pickup should not require a street address but should clearly show the pickup location.
- 03
Both fulfillment choices and prices should be visible on mobile.
- 04
Enter an address, switch to pickup, review then return to shipping: retain all address fields.
- 05
A pickup confirmation shows location and date, not the hidden shipping address.
A worked example, step by step
Free pickup is useful only when the shopper can reach the right location. Cost, location and availability belong to the same decision. In the product lab pickup is an explicit Oslo option; another region offers only standard delivery.
Compare delivery and pickup ↗- Choose Oslo and pickup. See the pickup location beside the control and 0 kr delivery in both the product estimate and a populated basket.
- Switch to mainland. Preserve basket and discount; disable pickup and explain the change to standard delivery.
- Switch back to Oslo. The shopper chooses pickup again. In the checkout lab also test that the entered address survives delivery, pickup and delivery.
The tradeoff to decide
Do not assume the nearest store is the desired pickup point. An automatic method change needs a clear message and updated total. Before a binding order, the shopper must review an altered fulfillment choice.
From demonstration to your store
Pickup location, opening hours, preparation and collection deadline need maintained merchant data. Distinguish item availability from ready-to-collect status. The product lab demonstrates costs and regions; the checkout lab demonstrates fields and dates. Neither reserves stock or arranges pickup.
How to investigate value
Measure confirmed, deduplicated outcomes per eligible checkout start. Define paid orders and accepted credit orders separately.
Watch for side effects
Payment errors, duplicate orders, incorrect totals, unclear arrival dates and discount cost. A pay click is only an attempt.
This is a proposed investigation, not a measured result. Choose one hypothesis and define the audience before testing.
